Moving to Myrtle Beach in 2026: Housing, Hurricane Zones, Seasonal Access, and Checklist

Prepare a Myrtle Beach move by distinguishing city and Grand Strand housing, checking hurricane zones, planning seasonal access, and verifying the property.

Choose the part of the Grand Strand that fits

A move described as “Myrtle Beach” may lead to the city itself or to one of several communities spread along the Grand Strand. The coast can offer recreation, hospitality employment, retirement appeal, and a distinctive everyday rhythm, but the correct home depends on the exact jurisdiction, flood and evacuation context, seasonal traffic, and whether the property operates partly as a vacation community.

Define the ordinary week first. Identify the work and care geography, tolerance for visitor-season travel, housing type, and distance from daily services. Then compare current properties with insurance, association rules, loading access, and the storm plan attached to that address.

Keep the Myrtle Beach geography and property rules exact

Myrtle Beach city had an estimated 40,937 residents in 2025, but a move to “Myrtle Beach” is often really a decision among the city, nearby Horry County communities, and the wider Grand Strand. Keep the geography exact: city-level housing figures should not be used as though they describe every coastal address.

Census QuickFacts reports a 2020–2024 median gross rent of $1,261, a median owner-occupied home value of $388,800, and a 17.7-minute mean commute. The commute figure is descriptive, not a guarantee; seasonal traffic, bridge approaches, tourism activity, and exact work location can change the daily experience.

Use the statewide moving guide for the South Carolina layer, then place the exact parcel, hurricane zone, insurance, commute, and move-in access into the ultimate moving checklist. Do not let the beach label substitute for property due diligence.

City data is not a Grand Strand price list

The Census figures provide a consistent city benchmark, not live inventory. Price the actual dwelling and add association or building fees, utilities, parking, flood and wind coverage where relevant, deposits, and seasonal or short-term-rental rules that apply to that address.

The warehouse contained a 59-lead internal destination sample, but that sample is not representative of city residents or the entire moving market. It is intentionally excluded from the stat cards. Official city data is the stronger basis for a public destination guide.

QuickFacts also reports that 84.2% of residents age 1+ lived in the same house one year earlier. That is useful only as a stability measure for the city population; it does not tell us which origins dominate current moving demand.

The last approach depends on the origin

From Charlotte or the Piedmont, the move is an inland-to-coast drive with a final approach through Horry County. From the Northeast, it is a longer interstate shipment and customer trip. From Florida or coastal Georgia, the route approaches along a different coastal axis. All three can converge on the same local constraint: one property entrance and a storm-sensitive coastal road network.

Horry County publishes different evacuation paths for different segments of the coast, including routes involving US 501, SC 22, SC 544, and US 17. Those are emergency routes, not instructions for a moving truck. Their planning value is to show why the address and side of the city matter.

Know the zone before choosing the date

Horry County’s zone guidance distinguishes coastal evacuation zones and notes that people in flood-prone areas and mobile-home residents should consider evacuation even outside a designated zone. Save the exact zone result and follow current official directions during an event.

A storm contingency should define three things before loading: who can postpone, where the shipment waits, and how the household remains safely housed. It should not promise that a particular road will stay open.

A Myrtle Beach move that is resilient

Confirm legal parking or private loading space, building or community hours, gate access, and the route from truck to door. During high-visitor periods, a workable weekday morning can be more reliable than a nominally convenient weekend arrival.

Use how to choose a moving company to compare written weather, access, waiting, and storage terms. Keep identity documents, medicine, pet supplies, chargers, insurance contacts, and enough clothing outside the shipment to tolerate a delay.
