Choose the safest practical travel option

The fastest option is not always the easiest for your pet. Think about your pet’s health, age, size, past travel, breathing, anxiety, and ability to rest in a carrier. Ask your veterinarian when you are unsure.

Compare driving, flying, and hired transport

Air cargo	Consider only when cabin travel is unavailable and your veterinarian, airline, route, weather, and kennel plan are acceptable. Check animal health, breed restrictions, temperature limits, kennel rules, handling, routing, and pickup.
Professional pet transporter	May fit when you cannot drive the route and the provider can show a clear custody and welfare plan. Check identity, USDA registration when applicable, insurance, route, stops, vehicle conditions, emergency authority, updates, and delivery proof.

Do not give a sedative or change medication because a moving checklist suggests it. Ask your veterinarian whether medication is appropriate for your pet and travel method. If medication is prescribed, ask whether it should be tested before travel.

Keep your pet away from moving-day traffic

Open doors, strangers, noise, and stacked boxes make escape more likely. Put your pet in a closed room before the crew arrives, use a secure carrier, or arrange care with someone your pet knows. Place a clear note on the door and tell the crew not to enter.

Never pack your pet’s medicine, records, carrier, food, or arrival supplies on the moving truck. Your pet should travel with you or with the person specifically responsible for the animal.

Give your pet one safe room at first
