WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. cities across 45 measures. Moveline kept the leading cities with roughly 200,000 or more residents from the published top 20 to create a useful large-city view. The category figures below are ranks within WalletHub’s full study; a lower number is better.
This table corrects an important weakness in a housing-and-parks ranking: schools and child care are visible rather than left for a footnote. The category ranks still describe the city as a whole. They do not guarantee admission to a school or an available child-care place.
Why the first four make strong starting points
Fremont ranks first overall in WalletHub’s study, second for education and child care, fifth for health and safety, and thirteenth for affordability. That combination is unusually balanced, although actual Bay Area housing can still be difficult for a household whose income differs from local medians.
Overland Park places second overall and second for affordability. Its education-and-care position is thirteenth and health-and-safety position is eleventh, making it the clearest cost-conscious alternative among the leaders.

Seattle, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco offer big-city access
Seattle’s education-and-care rank of eighth and affordability rank of fifth are strong in the source analysis. Its health-and-safety rank of 105 is the visible concern. A household considering Seattle should compare neighborhoods and daily routes instead of treating the citywide average as an address result.
San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco offer deep job markets, health-care networks, and city amenities. Their education-and-care positions are all within the top 20 of the study, while their affordability ranks are weaker than the first four. The job offer and actual housing search must justify the cost.
Confirm the school and child-care plan before the home
Enter each candidate address in the district’s official school assignment tool and call the school about enrollment, grade-level capacity, calendars, transportation, special services, and required records. A real-estate listing or general city grade is not an enrollment promise.
Contact child-care providers before choosing a move date. Ask about openings, waitlists, hours, age groups, tuition and fees, closures, meals, transportation, licensing, and the daily route from home to care and work. A favorable city category rank cannot create an opening at the provider you need.
