Mail forwarding buys time; it does not update your address with banks, insurers, government agencies, employers, doctors, or online stores. Start with USPS, then change the accounts that control identity, money, insurance, utilities, health, and deliveries.
Use one list with the organization, account, method, date submitted, and confirmation. That turns a scattered chore into a short series of updates you can prove were completed.
Two to four weeks before the move
Do not cancel utilities at the old home before cleaning, inspection, or closing is complete. If the homes overlap, write the end date and start date separately. Photograph final meter readings where appropriate and keep the final bill.
Know exactly what USPS forwarding does
USPS says a permanent change-of-address request generally forwards First-Class Mail for 12 months and periodicals for 60 days; its official page lists the rules by mail class. Marketing mail is generally not forwarded. Forwarding redirects eligible pieces, but the Post Office does not edit every sender’s account.
Keep a small log of forwarded mail. Each forwarded statement, notice, or magazine identifies another sender that still needs the new address. Remove the old address from saved shipping profiles after current orders arrive.
Update government records separately
The IRS currently accepts several address-update methods, including Form 8822, a tax return using the new address, a signed statement, or verified oral notification in certain situations. Joint filers and businesses have additional instructions. Use the current IRS page for the exact method.
Protect money, credit, and insurance records
Use saved contact information or the institution’s official app or website. A message that arrives immediately after a move and asks you to “confirm” bank credentials may be phishing. Sign in independently rather than following an unexpected link.
Update health, household, and professional accounts
Tell doctors, dentists, pharmacies, labs, hospitals, therapists, veterinarians, and medical-equipment suppliers. Confirm which providers remain in network after an interstate move and transfer prescriptions before the last refill becomes urgent. Update emergency contacts and the address printed on pet identification.
Change mobile service, internet, alarm monitoring, home maintenance, lawn or pool services, parking, toll accounts, roadside assistance, gym, library, clubs, professional licenses, unions, alumni groups, charities, and subscriptions. Notify family and close contacts through a channel appropriate for your privacy.
Remove the old address from shopping and delivery profiles
Online stores, grocery delivery, meal kits, pet supplies, pharmacies, ride-share apps, maps, food delivery, and crowdfunding accounts often keep several addresses. Do not merely add the new one: make it the default and delete the old address after open orders are complete.
During the first three months, catch what the checklist missed
Review forwarding labels, bank and card statements, email receipts, password-manager entries, automatic payments, and the previous year’s tax documents. Ask the former landlord, buyer, or building office how misdirected mail should be handled without asking them to keep an open-ended forwarding job.
Add these address tasks to Moveline’s complete moving checklist and keep documents in the moving timeline. The finish line is not an empty mailbox at the old home; it is a complete set of accounts that now recognize the new address.
