A small apartment can still produce a large moving bill when the building slows every trip. For early planning, expect roughly $500–$1,500 for many local studio or small one-bedroom moves, about $1,300–$1,600 for the Moveline Austin–Houston studio example, and about $1,800–$2,200 for the New York–Chicago example before packing, storage, or difficult-item service.
This guide turns those ranges into a price for your move. It explains how belongings, distance, traffic, parking, elevator reservations, stairs, walking distance, city loading rules, and the delivery window affect the total—and how to compare professional service with the complete cost of a rental truck.
Moveline internal research examples
Moveline’s agent network is responsible for more than one million U.S. moves each year. For this review, our moving-volume research covered about 1.6 million U.S. move records from July 29, 2025 through July 28, 2026. We also ran a 1,800-pound studio through Moveline’s moving cost calculator on concrete routes.
The calculator produces an early transportation estimate, not a binding quote. We round the results and show a wider price range because inventory changes, building access, parking, traffic, packing, and the service agreement can move the final price in either direction.
Why local apartment moves are usually priced by time
A local mover commonly prices a crew and truck by the hour, often with a minimum number of hours and separate travel time. The bill begins before the first box moves when the crew must park, check in, install floor protection, wait for an elevator, or walk a long distance from truck to unit.
Ask for the hourly rate, crew size, minimum, travel charge, start and stop rules, fuel or truck charge, stairs, long carry, packing materials, and overtime. A smaller apartment can still reach the upper end of the range when either building slows every trip.
Distance changes the price method
Long-distance prices depend on the belongings, mileage, route, pickup and delivery windows, and purchased services. Some shipments share truck space and use a delivery range; others reserve a truck or container. Storage, transfer between vehicles, or a smaller shuttle truck can add cost.
Use the Moveline moving cost calculator with the real addresses, date, and home size. Then give each mover the same item list and building information so the written prices describe the same move.
Inventory matters more than the apartment label
A sparsely furnished one-bedroom may contain less than a full studio with books, exercise equipment, a sleeper sofa, storage bins, balcony furniture, or a packed garage space. List every large item and estimate the number and type of boxes after decluttering.
Identify items that need disassembly, packing, crating, appliance service, or special equipment. Measure sofas, bed frames, desks, shelving, doorways, and elevators. An item that cannot use the normal route may require extra labor, building approval, or removal from the shipment.
Building access can be the largest local cost factor
Ask both buildings about move hours, elevator reservations, deposits, certificates of insurance, loading docks, parking, door protection, floor covering, and staff check-in. Reserve required time before confirming the mover.
In New York City, movers must plan legal truck routes and available loading space; commercial vehicles cannot simply use every road or curb. Dense traffic and a long walk between truck and apartment can add hours. Other cities and buildings have their own loading-zone, parking, and elevator rules, so verify both addresses rather than copying a rule from another move.
Compare a professional move with the complete DIY price
A truck’s advertised base rate is only one DIY cost. Add mileage, fuel, tolls, protection products, equipment, parking, supplies, helpers, food, customer travel, and the value of another rental day if loading takes longer than planned.
For a one-way move, confirm included mileage, the assigned truck size, return location, fuel policy, late fees, and replacement plan. For a local move, compare the complete truck-and-helper total with the professional mover’s minimum rather than comparing one hourly rate with one base truck price.
Build a written price from the same facts
- Exact origin and destination addresses
- Move date and acceptable pickup and delivery windows
- Item list, estimated boxes, and declared high-value items
- Floors, stairs, elevator details, and walking distance
- Parking, loading dock, city rules, and building documents
- Packing, materials, disassembly, and reassembly
- Storage, shuttle, waiting time, and difficult-item service
- Valuation choice, payment schedule, and cancellation terms
Ways to keep a small move affordable
Reduce the inventory before requesting final prices, pack ordinary items yourself when appropriate, reserve elevators and parking early, and disassemble only items you can reassemble correctly. Label every box by destination room and keep hallways clear before the crew arrives.
Choose the service that reduces the total cost of the move, not merely the lowest advertised charge. A slightly higher written price can be the better value when it includes travel, building paperwork, equipment, and the full delivery work.
After checking the Moveline moving cost calculator, complete the building details in the apartment moving checklist. Then give the same item list and access facts to every company using Moveline’s mover interview questions.
