The best interstate moving estimate is not automatically the lowest total—it is the estimate that prices the same belongings, addresses, access, dates, and services as the others and clearly explains how the final bill can change.

Use the five steps below to compare estimates on equal terms, verify the company behind each document, and identify a low price that depends on missing belongings or services before you book.

1. Make every company estimate the same move

Ask for an in-home or thorough virtual survey. If one company estimates fewer boxes, a lower weight, easier access, or less packing than another, the totals are not yet comparable.

2. Compare the estimate type before the price

For a non-binding estimate, FMCSA says the mover generally cannot require more than 110% of the estimate at delivery. Additional lawful charges may still be billed later. The 110% rule limits delivery payment; it does not turn a non-binding estimate into a final-price cap.

3. Read three estimates on one screen

Estimate A should not win because it is $900 lower than B. Its weight and services differ. Once the company adds the missing belongings, packing, and stairs, its price and type can be compared meaningfully with B and C.

4. Check the company and the complete document packet

Reviews are evidence of customer experience, not a replacement for licensing and written terms. Look for repeated comments about estimate accuracy, pickup, delivery, damage handling, communication, and claims rather than relying only on the average star rating.

5. Choose the clearest complete offer

The ConsumerAffairs reference works because estimate types sit beside their real consumer consequences. Moveline uses that direct structure and adds a complete side-by-side exercise so the reader can act on the rule before signing.

Moveline’s agent network handles more than one million U.S. moves a year. Across that volume, complete belongings and access information consistently produce clearer estimate comparisons.

Use the mover interview questions and additional-charge guide before booking. The Moveline calculator provides an independent early price check.
